Carp Fishing Gear Checklist — What to Bring on a Session

Carp Fishing Gear Checklist — What to Bring on a Session

Arriving at a dam only to find you've forgotten something essential is one of the more frustrating experiences in fishing. This checklist covers everything you need for a day carp session on a South African dam, from the main rod setup to the small items that make a session comfortable and productive.

Rods and Reels

  • Carp rods — 12 ft, 2.5–3 lb test curve (one per rod setup, typically 2–3 rods for a full session)
  • Baitrunner reels — 4000–5000 series, loaded with 12–15 lb mono or 20–30 lb braid
  • Rod pod or bank sticks and bite alarms
  • Spare line or a loaded spare spool

Terminal Tackle

  • Honey Pot Carp Feeders (3 minimum — one per rod plus a spare) — available at R35
  • Lead weights — various sizes (30–120 g depending on casting range and conditions)
  • Carp hooks — size 8, 10, and 12 (bring all three; conditions dictate which is best)
  • Fluorocarbon hooklink material — 10–15 lb
  • Swivels — size 8 and 10
  • Quick-change clips or lead clips
  • Bait stops and hair rig needle
  • Ready-tied hair rigs (tie at home the night before; bring 6–8 spares per rod)
  • Rig bin or wallet to store tied rigs

Bait

  • Hook baits: boilies (14–15 mm), tiger nuts, sweetcorn, or wafters
  • Groundbait: fine brown breadcrumb or commercial method mix, 500 g–1 kg for a day session
  • Honey Pot Chum Carp Attractant — at least 2 flavours, matched to conditions. The 5-Flavour Box Set (R249) covers all scenarios.
  • Groundbait mixing bowl
  • Small container for soaking hook baits in Honey Pot Chum before the session

Landing and Unhooking

  • Large landing net (42–50 inch arms for bigger fish)
  • Unhooking mat — protects fish on hard ground
  • Forceps or disgorger for removing hooks
  • Carp-safe antiseptic for treating hook wounds on the fish if required
  • Weigh sling and scales if you want to record fish weight

Session Comfort and Safety

  • Sun protection: SPF 50 sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat. SA summer dam sun is severe.
  • Polarised sunglasses — for spotting fish activity on the surface
  • Water — minimum 2 litres for a day session
  • Food and snacks
  • Insect repellent — particularly relevant at dusk on dam banks
  • First aid kit
  • Phone with sufficient battery — dam banks are not always safe to be completely incommunicado

Admin

  • Valid fishing licence from the relevant provincial authority (GDARD for Gauteng, CapeNature for Western Cape, etc.)
  • Venue permit or resort booking confirmation if required
  • Cash for any on-site fees if card facilities are unavailable

For Night Sessions: Additional Items

  • Bite alarm receiver
  • Headlamp with red-light mode and spare batteries
  • Bivvy or shelter
  • Sleeping bag rated below the overnight temperature
  • Additional warm clothing (Highveld nights in winter drop significantly)
  • Spare pre-tied rigs — rig tying in the dark is slow; have 10+ ready
