Carp Fishing at Roodeplaat Dam — Venue Guide

Carp Fishing at Roodeplaat Dam — Venue Guide

Roodeplaat Dam is one of the most accessible and productive carp venues in Gauteng. Located approximately 25 km north-east of Pretoria, the dam offers a range of fishing environments — from open water to sheltered bays and reed-lined margins — and holds a strong population of common carp across its 370-hectare surface area.

Access and Permits

Roodeplaat Dam falls under the management of the Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve. A valid Gauteng fishing licence (available from GDARD) is required. Day fishing access is available from designated launch and access points around the dam. Check current access arrangements and resort bookings directly with the Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve before your visit, as regulations and access points can change.

Dam Features

Roodeplaat is a warm, moderately turbid impoundment typical of Highveld dams. Key features include:

  • The dam wall — structure, depth change, and current breaks make the wall area a reliable holding zone
  • Northern bays — shallower, weedy bays with good carp movement at dawn and dusk
  • Reed beds — extensive reed margins on the western and northern shores; carp patrol these edges actively
  • Open water channels — carp use deeper channels as patrol routes between feeding areas

Carp Location by Season

  • Summer (Oct–Mar): fish the bays and reed margins at first and last light. Carp are active across the dam. Water is warm and feeding is confident.
  • Winter (May–Aug): focus on the dam wall area and deeper channels during the warmest part of the day (11:00–15:00). The dam cools significantly on the Highveld in winter. Target south-facing banks that receive winter sun.
  • Spring (Aug–Oct): carp move back into the northern bays as water warms. This transitional period can produce excellent fishing as fish regain condition after winter.

Recommended Attractants for Roodeplaat

Roodeplaat is moderately turbid for most of the year, which suits stronger scent profiles:

  • Sweetcorn — a year-round all-rounder that consistently works on this dam
  • Garlic — particularly effective in winter and post-cold-front conditions
  • Durban Beachfront — worth trying when water is coloured or visibility is reduced after rain

Use the 5-Flavour Box Set (R249) to test all five profiles across sessions and build a flavour map for your specific swims on this dam.

Tactics

The method feeder is highly effective at Roodeplaat given the dam's turbid conditions and moderately soft bottom. The Honey Pot Feeder's slow-release chamber works particularly well here — the sustained scent release compensates for reduced water clarity, giving carp a reliable scent trail to follow to your hook bait.

Fish tight to the reed margin edges in the northern bays during summer, and deeper open water near the dam wall in winter. Leave the rig in place for 45–60 minutes per cast to allow the scent zone to develop.

The Honey Pot Carp Feeder (R35) and Honey Pot Chum Attractant (R55, five flavours) are available online with nationwide delivery via The Courier Guy.
