Garlic in winter vs Sweetcorn in summer

Summer: Sweetcorn leads
In the warmer months — October through March across most of South Africa — carp are active, feeding aggressively, and covering ground. Sweetcorn's bright, sweet scent profile triggers fast responses in clear to lightly coloured water. It's the go-to when fish are on the feed and water temps are up.
Winter: Garlic takes over
As water cools from April onwards, carp slow down. They're still feeding, but they move less and are more selective. Garlic is a dense, penetrating scent that diffuses effectively even in cold, still water. It reaches fish that aren't actively hunting and pulls them in slowly — which is exactly the behaviour you're fishing to in winter.
The simple rule
Warm water, active fish: reach for Sweetcorn. Cold water, slow fish: reach for Garlic. Keep both in your kit and switch with the seasons. No complicated rigs, no expensive bait changes — just the right scent for the conditions.
